7 Kitchen Layout Mistakes to Avoid (NOVA Remodel Guide)

The seven layout mistakes we see most often in Northern Virginia kitchen remodels — and the simple fixes that make the room work every day.

After hundreds of Northern Virginia kitchen remodels, the same seven layout mistakes come up again and again.

1. Ignoring the work triangle

Sink → range → fridge should form a triangle with each leg 4–9 feet. Longer than 26 feet total and you'll walk miles cooking dinner.

2. An island that's too big — or too small

Under 42" wide feels like a table. Over 54" and you can't reach the middle. Aim for 42"–48" wide and 36"–48" of clearance on every side.

3. Dead corners

Blind corners with no pull-out = 4 sq ft of wasted storage. Always spec a corner solution — lazy Susan, magic corner, or a diagonal cabinet.

4. Not enough landing space

You need 15" of counter on both sides of the range, 18"+ on the handle side of the fridge, and 24"+ next to the sink.

5. Fridge door swings into a walkway

A common townhome mistake. Check swing clearance against every doorway and island edge before framing.

6. Under-planned lighting

One dome fixture doesn't cut it. You need three layers: ambient (recessed cans), task (under-cabinet), and accent (pendants or in-cabinet).

7. Trash and recycling in the wrong spot

Best spot: pull-out next to the sink. Second best: on the island end. Worst: on the far wall — no one walks food scraps 8 feet.

Bonus: outlets

NOVA code now requires GFCI outlets every 4 feet along counters. Plan for at least two USB outlets on the island for phones/tablets.
