Small Kitchen Remodel Ideas for Northern Virginia Townhomes
Nine proven small-kitchen ideas we've used in Reston, Ashburn, and Alexandria townhomes — more storage, more light, and a bigger feel without moving walls.
Townhomes across Reston, Ashburn, Alexandria, and Arlington almost always have the same kitchen problem: too narrow, too dark, and not enough storage.
1. Slim shaker or flat-panel doors
Thinner rails and less door detail make a small kitchen feel less busy — instantly cleaner.
2. Cabinets to the ceiling
Skip the soffit gap. Going ceiling-height adds 15–20% more storage and makes the room look taller.
3. Light-color cabinets on top, darker below
Two-tone kitchens visually expand the walls up and ground the floor.
4. Full-depth pantry pull-outs
In a townhome you rarely have room for a walk-in pantry. Two full-depth pull-outs at the end of a run replace one.
5. Under-cabinet LED lighting
Cheap, easy, transformative. Removes the shadow line every galley kitchen has.
6. Zellige or vertical-stack backsplash to the ceiling
Draws the eye up. Cost: ~$2,000. Impact: massive.
7. Peninsula instead of a full island
You rarely have 42" clearance on all sides in a townhome. A peninsula gives you seating and prep space without breaking the flow.
8. Integrated / panel-front dishwasher
Removes one visual break in a small run.
9. Skip the range hood — vent through the microwave
For truly tight kitchens, a good over-the-range microwave with external venting saves a wall of cabinet real estate.
Typical small-kitchen budget in NOVA
A townhome kitchen refresh in the $35K–$55K range usually includes: new cabinets, quartz counters, tile backsplash, lighting, and appliance install. Layout stays the same.
